Does that really count?

.

I love Israel! That said, the ice cream here really leaves a lot to be desired. I don't know why - as a rule, the dairy products here are much yummier than what I've found anywhere else, and you'd think that ice cream would be an offshoot of dairy products... but I guess not. The stuff made here by Israeli companies just lacks the proper level of creaminess - that's my humble opinion!

However, there are a bunch of little ice cream shops that have cropped up all around, and these tend to carry fancier (generally foreign) brands. We went to one on Emek Refaim street earlier this year, and were impressed. They had creamy ice cream, and lots of fun toppings for the kids. And I did find their translation of the fistook (Hebrew for pistachio) ice cream to be entertaining:

Totally helpful, right?

haha... that's great! I can imagine the American tourists trying to figure that out now. (Fist ook? Fish took?)

Btw, if you want to have great ice cream in this country, visit Glidat Beer Sheva. It has amazing creamy ice cream made on location.

Awesome- extremely illuminating. But hey, at least they tried!

Maya - thanks - I am happy to try them out!

nmf #7 - it's true, they wrote in English letters, but I'm not sure you can actually call that trying... Generally, if you don't know a word in Hebrew, you can try just using English (and adding "atzia") and hoping for the best, but it doesn't usually work the other way around :)

Good thing the green color and the nuts lying around are a clue. Personally, one of the things that bothers me about Israeli ice cream is the artificial vanilla flavoring - nothing like real vanilla. Maybe they use artificial chocolate flavoring, too - there's some taste in there that just isn't right!

I could have an ice cream but without any toppings, please...
and only one scoopful,
that's enough, thank you! :)

debbie - that's interesting. I hadn't thought about the flavorings, to me the texture just feels wrong. But maybe...

BLOGitse - hello there! You've found my alter ego!

I would categorize this one as yet another manifestation of the "Natbag Syndrome"...
